Hey there! Thanks for checking out the VLM Studios blog. I'm Vanessa Lam, a Miami photographer and graphic designer specializing in portrait photography of babies, families, children, high-school seniors and executives. This is the latest concoction to come out of my creative juices. It's a blend of photography, a hint of flair, a dash of art and a whole lot of fun. I call it LIFE. INSPIRED.®

There was a whole-lotta-pink princess magic going on in Elizabeth’s 3rd Birthday session. As you can see, She’s a very powerful and tender princess who will one day rule the land sprinkled with pink feathers, necklaces and tiaras. This was such a fun session. She made me laugh out loud so many times with her out-of-this-world spunk, personality and imagination. Can’t wait to photograph her again. Enjoy! ♥ Vanessa

I didn’t know how to start this post. You see, this is my very sweet, beautiful, adorable niece Lourdes. My cousin (her Mom) and I had been out of touch for many years; in part because we live in different countries, but also because life happens and we allow it to dictate too many things. Yet, through the awesomeness of Facebook, we got back in touch. She e-mailed me about photographing Lourdes for her Quince (Fifteens). They were planning a special trip from Panama to Miami and she wanted to surprise her with the photo shoot. I LOVED the idea. The catch….they would be arriving within the week, would be in Miami for two days only and I had never really spoken to my niece or seen her in over 5 years.
So, I e-mailed her links to different sessions on my blog where she could choose a location and get ideas for wardrobe, we agreed on the date and time, and planned to meet 45 minutes prior to the session to decide which outfits and accessories would be in the shoot. As it turns out, the day of the session was THE most beautiful day of that week. EVERYTHING was perfect. And, as you can see, Lourdes is just a natural beauty. I am absolutely certain that higher forces were at play bringing all the pieces together perfectly for this shoot that also brought my cousin and her family back in my life. I’m so thankful for those three hours we got to spend together, sharing this gift, the gift that was given to me that I could now freely give. This session was magical on many levels and truly a gift from above.
I don’t usually post THIS many photos in a single post because I like to keep a few surprises for my clients, but since this is not really a client in the traditional sense, I thought I’d give you an insight into what a full session looks like, and MAN!! do I love this session.

For Kalia’s 6 month session, the whole family headed to Miami Beach for a tutu filled photo shoot. You remember Kalia’s newborn session in the studio right? Yeah, she’s now 6 months old! What’s going on this year? It seriously feels like it’s flying to me. Either that or, I’m {plain and simple} getting OLD. I remember when I was in my teens, my parents (or anyone older than 30) always talked about time in these terms: “oh, there’s not enough time in the day”, “time goes by so fast, they’re growing up so quickly”, which I always disregarded as ‘old people’ talk. Well, as it seems…I am now officially “old people” because I can’t seem to go a day without saying something about how fast time is passing. The beauty of it is that this awareness of time has taught me to really see, as well as to stop and appreciate the little things. The beauty of a sunset, the silence of the beach, the colors in the sky, the simplest of things. All those things were present for this gorgeous family’s photo shoot, absolutely beautiful, and although still cold, they were superb. After the shoot I stayed behind at the beach and captured some images to remember the beauty of this day, you can see those in this post. I STILL have not seen Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but every time I saw a preview of it I always thought the title was just pure genius. It tells me to expect the unexpected, and that not everything that seems good is good and not everything that seems bad is bad, which is exactly how life works. So, true to life, many unexpected things had caused this session to be rescheduled numerous times, and while the entire day had been perfectly bright, 10 minutes after arriving at the location it got overcast and cloudy. But, we would not be deterred by the MEREST of dark clouds, no siree, we were going to do this session today, rain or shine. So, after a rocky start due to the models’ tempers, it all worked out beautifully as you can see. It was the right amount of cloudy, bright and dramatic for a chance of awesomeness to happen. It was a little cloudy, but bright enough for this beach family session. These were the most energetic pair of boys I’ve ever photographed. Sitting still was not on their agenda on this day, specially if you asked them to, so I was very thankful for my 70-200mm lens which allowed me to be inconspicuous at the end of the session (when they were not particularly thrilled to see me). I love days when the light is this diffused and tender. There are many more great shots, but I want to surprise Mom and Dad who probably don’t think we got anything good. Enjoy! ♥ Vanessa

It happens every time. I do a session in Miami Beach and say to myself, “I gotta do this more often – come to Miami Beach”. Living so far west in the burbs of Miami, approximately 40 minutes away, I don’t go to Miami Beach very often. Yes, I do a lot of beach sessions, but rarely in Miami Beach. Last Friday, while the rest of the country was submerged in snow, I was doing a 6 month baby session at South Point Park in South Beach and, although cold and windy, it was breathtakingly beautiful. After the session ended I stayed a bit longer to take it all in. The light was gorgeous and the waves were nice enough to attract a few surfers, one of whom I asked if I could photograph as he stared at the water in reluctance at having to leave. Such beauty…it almost looked fake, like if it had been painted. These colors are exactly how it looked. I love Miami in the winter. ♥

Yes, I know it’s silly to say a baby is yummy, but come on! Look at that face. This is Emmie’s third session of her Chichi Baby Collection, you may recall her newborn and 4 month sessions which were equally adorable. This time around Emmie was mobile and testing out her personality, likes and dislikes, and boy did she let us know. She made me laugh many times and was cute as a button…..actually I don’t know what that expression means, cute as a button…I don’t know that many cute buttons, so I’ll just say she was cute as a…umm…baby! Yeah, that makes much more sense. Enjoy! ♥ Vanessa

Last time you saw Skylar she was just 4 months old and was way ahead of schedule for her age. Well, she’s still moving full steam ahead. Now she’s only 9 months and already standing and practically walking. This sweet butterfly is so smart and funny. She absolutely lit up when she got to play with the water spigot; laughing and drinking until exhaustion. When I said “that’s a wrap”, Mom put on cutest striped fleece hat that was apparently all Skylar wore during a cold spell she went through at the end of the year. Without a doubt, I get some of the best shots after I say “that’s a wrap”, so I never put away the camera as I KNOW there’s still magic to be had….like that last image…literally the last shot of the day. …is just too much. So sweet and joyous. I first photographed Mommy when Ethan was only a baby bump, then when he was newly born, then in the studio at around 5 months and now he’s a whole year old! To top it all, this family will be adding another little guy to the crew in a few months! Can’t wait to meet him and photograph him, and see who he’ll look like. I love doing the Chichi Baby Collections so much. Not only do I get the privilege of seeing the babies grow through that all important first year with all its incredible transformations, but I also get to know the family really well to where it no longer feels like a photo shoot, but more like you’re just hanging out at the park or beach and taking some pictures in between. I used my little FlipHD video camera to record a quick little video of Ethan, but the files are huge and I haven’t figured out how to make it smaller yet, so I’ll try to post it soon. In the meantime, enjoy this hilarious little dude. Oh those faces….love it. ♥ Vanessa

Named after Daddy, this brand spakin’ new bundle of goodness was absolutely perfect. He had just arrived in this world a few days earlier and was already showered with love from three generations of women (Mom, grandma and great-grandma!). He slept like a…um…baby. Ha! Seriously, he was so so good. He returned the “showering” love to Mommy by peeing on her in a few shots, but that’s what happens when it’s cold and you make a baby go commando for a few minutes.
